About our Organization
In 1986, Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery hosted the first ever Catch-A-Rainbow Kids Fishing Derby. The purpose of the event was to utilize Hatchery Creek and to connect local children with nature through fishing. The derby theme for the first few years was "Hooked on Fishing not on Drugs". The derby was organized by hatchery staff and a handful of local residence who supported the hatchery. Friends of Wolf Creek NFH, Inc. (FOWC) was formed as a legal nonprofit organization in 2005, anticipating the opening of the Visitor/Environmental Education Center in 2006. The formalization of the Friends Group was to accommodate the operation of the gift shop and to better support the hatchery. Today, FOWC not only raises funds; but assist with planning and organization of the Catch-A-Rainbow Kids Fishing Derby, Wounded Warriors Fishing Event, Catch A Smile Senior Derby, Reaching For Rainbows Special Needs Kids Fishing Derby, and other smaller events. The FOWC raises awareness of the hatchery programs and events it offers. Profits the FOWC receives from gift shop sales and donations support Environmental Education programs, caring for Ranger (the Skunk), and many other events and activities.
Friends of Wolf Creek NFH is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Mission/Purpose
Our Mission is to promote a better understanding and appreciation of the natural history, resources and habitat of Kentucky, with particular emphasis on promoting environmental education and recreation fishing to the public.
Our purpose is to plan, promote and conduct fishing events for children; promote the proper use and preservation of Kentucky streams, rivers and lakes for fishing and provide environmental education programs to the public.
We also serve an important role as an advocate for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. We secure resources needed for the hatchery, and serve as a liaison between the hatchery and local, state, and federal officials.
