Friends Formation and Activities

The Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Inc. (FWCNFH) evolved from a small group of people who wanted to help the hatchery put on a kid’s fishing derby, and called themselves the Catch-A-Rainbow committee. Twenty years later this fishing derby is one of the largest in the country with up to 1,650 children participating and donations from sponsors valued at over $40,000. The Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Inc was officially formed in the fall of 2005 as a 501(C) (3) nonprofit corporation that included the Catch-A-Rainbow committee. Since then our activities have expanded. This expansion came about due to the opening of the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery Visitor/Environmental Education Center in fall of 2006.

With the opening of the Visitor/Environmental Education Center, the activities and mission of the FWCNFH broadened. Today we operate a successful gift shop in this center that helps promote our mission by selling fishing licenses, fishing tackle and the widest assortment of environmental educational materials in the region.

Proceeds from the gift shop have helped fund programs for the environmental education center. These proceeds, along with received grants, have also helped procure needed equipment and supplies for the environmental education classroom located in the center.

Our aim is that each child that visits the hatchery, either with their family or on a field trip, will grow to appreciate their environment and the natural resources that surround them. With the Center's state-of-the-art classroom and theater system, passionate and dedicated staff, we are able to guide visitors on an interactive and fun-filled outdoor adventure, totally free of charge!
